Charlie Lam on cars and life beyond the Evo

Charlie Lam and her Evo have become one of the best car-owner duos we’ve seen in recent times. The impeccably modified yellow Evo V has become synonymous with its owner, proving once and for all that girls too can have superb taste in cars. Charlie is a Turbosmart brand ambassador and we have loved seeing her Evo come together over the years – every modification seemed to have a very clear purpose towards a forever-evolving goal.

Charlie’s journey with the Evo is one that started much earlier. She first got into cars before she had her licence.

“I would spectate and search different performance cars on the net for inspiration. I also learnt bit by bit through friends and my brother who also owned a Silvia at the time,” she said.

The family influence must have been strong, because her first car was a Nissan Silvia S14. But the modified car bug had bitten hard, and before long, she headed towards Evos.

“I chose an Evo because I didn’t see many street legal Evos around during the time I purchased it, especially not one which was track-inspired. I love the way they look and drive, depending on purpose. They are great for drags and track use!”

Of course, the car didn’t stay standard for long. Charlie quickly began to make her mark on the yellow beast, starting a list of modifications too long to remember. However, all were done with the aim to turn the Mitsu into a track-ready car that was also street legal.

“I’ve tuned the car several times now, installed 1000cc injectors, rebuilt the turbo, installed a Link ECU, upgraded the clutch and flywheel and of course all the exterior and interior carbon bits, seats and cage.”

“I love the fact Turbosmart believes in quality before quantity. All of their products are of high quality and their support staff are always there to assist, along with really good installation videos! The Evo is definitely Turbosmart-equipped and don’t think I’d have it any other way.”

As one would expect, Charlie is no stranger to attention on the road. She’s almost the last person most people expect to see behind the wheel of a heavily modified, track-ready Evo.

“Usually I get asked if it’s my brother’s/boyfriends’/dad’s/uncle’s/any male subject in your life’s car. Everyone I have met have been pretty friendly and talkative and give their open opinions and advice about the car.”

What Charlie loves about her Evo is also what she loves about modifying cars in general. It’s about forming a relationship with the machine.

“[The best part is] being able to go into the garage and know that it’s yours, when you get to use it at the track and see it perform but best of all, learning inch by inch about your car.”

But the scene itself also has its effects. Modifying a car, for Charlie, became about more than just having a unique, head-turning set of wheels.

“I felt that it was a passion and a hobby at the same time. It got me thinking, working and learning all at the same time. Along with the great group of friends, I love meeting people who have the same passion and seeing their creations.”

Today, Charlie is a brand ambassador for Turbosmart. We love Charlie and her Evo, but it seems Charlie does return some of that love.

“I love the fact Turbosmart believes in quality before quantity. All of their products are of high quality and their support staff is always there to assist, along with really good installation videos! The Evo is definitely Turbosmart-equipped and don’t think I’d have it any other way.”

Sadly, a job change and a relocation is forcing the sale of the Evo. But there is a silver-lining to this dark cloud – there will be a replacement, although Charlie is remaining tight-lipped about what that may be.

“Fortunately I do have a new car in mind, but that’s all a secret that will be revealed shortly! All I can tell you is that I will make it one of a kind!”

Charlie’s dream car is a Rauh Welt Begriff 993 Porsche or a 326 Power Lexus RC. Apparently neither of these are the next in line, but we wouldn’t be disappointed if they were.

Whatever the new car may be, we’re excited. And we’re sure there will be some Turbosmart goodies involved along the way. After all, we can’t imagine Charlie without a turbocharged car. She is like a Kiwi angel of boost.
