Nissan’s legendary and long-lived GU/Y61 Patrol, introduced in 1997 and still in production today, is a popular off-roader around the world, thanks to its ability to keep going when the going gets tough.
However, in stock form, the Patrol’s turbo diesel engines tend to struggle under the vehicle’s weight – a problem exacerbated when heavy off-road equipment and larger tyres are fitted. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for owners to invest in tuning their Patrols, in order to improve the vehicle’s performance and drivability. One of the issues encountered when tuning a ZD30 or TD42 is the erratic boost curve afforded by the standard actuator, which prevents the engine from reaching its full potential.
This is the what Turbosmart set out to rectify with the new IWG-75 internal wastegate actuators for the ZD30DDTi and TD42T.
Independent dyno testing of a ZD30DDTi Patrol showed that the standard actuator experienced a dramatic 5PSI boost drop between 1700 and 2400 RPM, which caused a corresponding drop in power and torque. While tuning increased the Patrol’s peak power, it could not eradicate this mid range power drop caused by the standard actuator.
The Turbosmart IWG-75 provided faster boost build up, less drop off at the top end, and kept the boost steadier throughout the rev range – and eliminated the mid range boost drop. The result was not only higher peak power, but significantly more power and torque where you need it every day – in the mid range.
Combined with a chip tune, the results of the Turbosmart actuator were astounding. At 2000 RPM, the standard car produced 37.4kW at the wheels. With a chip alone, that was increased to 46.2kW. Adding the Turbosmart actuator, the power jumped to 63kW at the same revs – almost 60% higher than standard.
Similar gains can be expected from the IWG-75 fitted to the larger TD42T.
The IWG-75 Kit for the ZD30DDTi and TD42T includes a Boost Reference Adapter that attaches between the vehicles standard MAP sensor and its mounting, providing an accurate manifold pressure reference to the actuator without having to tap into the manifold. With two pressure reference ports, the Boost Reference Adapter can also be used to run a mechanical boost gauge or other accessory reliant on manifold pressure. All mounting hardware is included, and no custom fabrication is necessary.
If you’re tuning your Patrol, Turbosmart’s Internal Wastegate Actuator is a must have. Turbosmart gets you more power where it matters.
