7 Quick Steps to Cleaning Your BOV

BOV and Lubricant

How often should I clean my BOV?

Cleaning Your Turbosmart Blow off Valve (BOV or BPV) is designed to provide you with years of reliable service, providing a simple maintenance schedule is observed.

It is important to clean your blow off valve on a regular basis to ensure that it is functioning properly. Depending on how often you use your BOV, you may need to clean it weekly or monthly. Turbosmart recommends that the following maintenance procedure be carried out at six-monthly intervals or higher intervals if the environment is dusty or wet.

You can clean your BOV with a simple cleaning solution of soap and water. Rinse the valve thoroughly after cleaning to remove any residual soap. Always use a microfibre cloth when cleaning your BOV. If you notice any build-up on the valve, you can carefully clean it with a brush or other scrubbing tool. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning your BOV.

Regular maintenance will ensure that your BOV is operating at its peak performance and will extend the product’s working life.

Why keep your BOV Clean?

It is essential to keep your blow off valve clean to prevent it from sticking or becoming clogged. A build-up of dirt and grime can cause the valve to become less effective or fail, so it is essential to clean it regularly. In addition, a dirty blow off valve can cause your car to overheat, leading to engine damage.

Follow These Steps When Cleaning Your BOV or BPV

Cleaning your blow off valve is relatively simple and only takes a few minutes. If you have a Turbosmart blow off valve, you know it is essential to keep it clean. To demonstrate this procedure, we have used the Kompact Series Dual Port.

1. Remove the cap of the BOV by rotating in an anti-clockwise direction

2. Next, remove the spring

3. Carefully remove the piston. Then thoroughly clean the piston and the bore of the BOV.

4. Inspect the surface of the piston and the bore of the BOV for scoring or excessive wear.

The Ultimate Guide to External Wastegates

Turbosmart External Wastegates - GENV Range

What is an External Wastegate?

An external wastegate is a device that helps control boost pressure in a turbocharged engine. Regulating the exhaust gases that flow through the turbocharger limits the maximum amount of boost that can be produced. This helps prevent engine damage from too much boost pressure and keeps the engine running at optimal levels.

External wastegates typically consist of an inlet and outlet port, valve, and pressure actuator. The actuator is connected to the wastegate valve and is responsible for opening and closing it. When the engine is running, exhaust gases flow through the wastegate and into the turbine, spinning it to create power. The actuator opens and closes the valve to regulate how much exhaust gas flows through, and, therefore, how much boost is produced.

External wastegates are a vital part of any turbocharged engine and help ensure it runs at peak performance levels. Without a wastegate, an engine could be damaged by too much boost pressure, or may not run as efficiently as possible. If you’re considering adding a turbocharger to your engine, be sure to include an external wastegate in your plans.

How does an External Wastegate Work?

An external wastegate is a device that helps regulate the amount of exhaust gas flow in an engine. It does this by diverting some of the exhaust gas from the engine’s main exhaust port. This diversion allows the engine to run at higher efficiency and prevents premature wear on engine components.

External wastegates are most commonly found on turbocharged engines. That’s because they provide a way to control boost pressure, which is the amount of air pressure that’s forced into the engine by the turbocharger. By controlling boost pressure, an external wastegate can help prevent engine damage caused by too much pressure.

External wastegates are also used on naturally aspirated engines. In this case, they’re used to control exhaust gas temperatures. By diverting some of the exhaust gas away from the engine, an external wastegate can help keep the engine cooler and prevent damage caused by excessive heat.

When is an External Wastegate needed?

An external wastegate is usually needed when the internal wastegate in the turbocharger cannot effectively control boost pressure. This can happen for a number of reasons, including a faulty or damaged internal wastegate, an incorrect wastegate spring size, or simply because the boost pressure is too high for the internal wastegate to handle. Whatever the reason, an external wastegate can help to regulate boost pressure and prevent the turbocharger from over boosting.

External wastegates can also be used to fine-tune boost pressure levels. By adjusting the position of the external wastegate’s dump tube, it’s possible to change how much exhaust gas is diverted away from the turbine wheel. This can be used to increase or decrease boost pressure as needed, allowing for more precise control over the turbocharger’s output.

External wastegates are not always necessary, but they can be a valuable addition to any turbocharged setup. If you’re having boost control issues or you want to be able to fine-tune your turbocharger’s output, an external wastegate may be the answer.

Things to consider when choosing an External Wastegate

External wastegates are available in a variety of sizes and designs. They can be manual or electronic, and a switch or a computer can control them. Several aftermarket products allow you to upgrade or replace your existing wastegate.

If you’re looking for an upgrade or replacement for your existing wastegate, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you’ll need to decide what size and type of wastegate you need. Then, you’ll need to choose a model compatible with your engine.

Once you’ve chosen the right wastegate for your application, you’ll need to install it. Installing an external wastegate is usually a relatively straightforward process, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you’ll need to ensure that the wastegate is mounted correctly.

Second, you’ll need to connect the wastegate to the engine’s exhaust system. This connection will typically be made with a coupling or clamp. Finally, you’ll need to route the wastegate’s discharge tube so that it doesn’t come into contact with any moving engine parts.

Once your external wastegate is installed, you’ll need to adjust it to provide the correct amount of boost pressure for your application. This adjustment is typically made with a knob or dial on the wastegate.

Once you have your external wastegate installed and adjusted, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits it provides.

How are Turbosmart External Wastegates made?

Turbosmart wastegates are made with high-quality materials and precision engineering to ensure reliable performance and durability. The housings are made from cast aluminium, while the internal components are made from CNC-machined billet aluminium. The diaphragms are made from high-strength silicone, and the springs are made from stainless steel. These materials work together to create a wastegate that can withstand extreme temperatures and pressures.

What you should never do with your External Wastegate

There are a few things you should never do with your external wastegate.

1. Do not forget to properly vent the exhaust gases. If you don’t, the pressure will build up and could cause the wastegate to blow out.

2. Never use an improper size or shape of tubing for your exhaust gases. This can create backpressure and cause the wastegate to malfunction. Finally, never block off the wastegate completely. Doing so will prevent it from doing its job and could cause severe engine damage.

Suppose you’re unsure how to properly install or use your external wastegate, consult a professional mechanic or tuner. They’ll be able to help you ensure that everything is set up correctly and safely.

How expensive are External Wastegates?

Turbocharger external watergates can be pretty expensive, depending on the make and model of the turbocharger. Some aftermarket options can cost upwards of $1,000. However, there are also some more affordable options available for less than $500. It depends on your budget and what you are looking for in a turbocharger external watergate. If you are looking for the best possible performance, then you will want to invest in a more expensive option. However, if you are looking for a basic watergate to help keep your turbocharger cool, you can get away with a less expensive option. Either way, do your research before purchasing a turbocharger external watergate to ensure that you are getting the best possible product for your money.

Some things to consider before purchasing an External Wastegate

There are a few different types of external wastegates on the market, so which one is best for your application?

When choosing an external wastegate, there are a few factors to consider:

1. Application: What type of vehicle are you using it on? Is it a street car or a race car? How much power are you making?

2. Mounting: Where do you want to mount the wastegate? Do you have room for a large, top-mount unit, or do you need a smaller, side-mount unit?

3. Budget: How much money do you want to spend on an external wastegate?

4. Preferences: What features are you looking for in an external wastegate?

Once you’ve considered all of these factors, you should have a good idea of what type of external wastegate is best for your application.

External wastegates are often more expensive than internal ones but offer greater flexibility and control. An external wastegate is worth considering if you’re serious about getting the most out of your turbocharged engine.

Why Choose a Turbosmart Wastegate?

When it comes to high-performance engines, there’s nothing quite like a turbocharged motor. The increased power and efficiency turbos provide make them popular among race car builders and engine tuners. But to get the most out of a turbocharged engine, it’s essential to have quality components like Turbosmart wastegates.

Turbosmart wastegates are designed to efficiently control the flow of exhaust gases from the turbocharger. This helps ensure that the turbocharger is operating at peak efficiency, providing more power and better fuel economy. In addition, Turbosmart wastegates can withstand higher temperatures and pressures than other brands, making them ideal for high-performance applications.

If you’re looking for a quality wastegate that can provide optimal performance for your turbocharged engine, look no further than Turbosmart.
