Smaller

Turbosmart turbochargers have been intentionally designed to be as tightly packaged as possible while not impacting or compromising performance.

Lighter

Advanced and modernized materials and the bearing system contribute to a performance turbocharger significantly lighter than the competition.

Faster

The focus and aerodynamic balance of the Turbosmart Range of turbochargers is faster acceleration, which is achieved through maximum flow at low shaft speeds while optimising other areas of the turbocharger to ensure outright mass flow is maintained at high speeds and flow.

Lightweight 310s Stainless Steel Investment Cast Turbine Housings. These housings have been CFD designed to optimize aerodynamics and performance, but also weight. The design of Turbocharger turbine housings is such that we’ve taken advantage of a more advanced manufacturing process to create the most lightweight housings possible while ensuring thermal stability and impact strength for the installation’s life. Each housing is optimised for AR specification at the tongue and across the housing.

Lightweight, Aluminium compressor covers feature CFD-driven and optimised AR design with an anti-surge inlet, built-in speed sensor and boosts reference ports. The covers have been designed for the lowest possible weight while providing optimal aerodynamics and respect to the required ARs.

T14 Inconel Turbine wheel for Extreme EGTs and unique aerodynamics and profile for high mass air flow potential with a focus on overall engine pressure differential. Trim combinations have been developed to optimise end-to-end engine pressure differential through expansion ratios and reduced back pressure. The low profile hub of the shaft contributes to mass flow, complementing the aerodynamic balance further.

Proprietary Dual Ceramic Bearing System with optimised efficiency and reduced friction losses, contributing to increases in transient response. The bearing system is designed and validated for the lowest rotating mass and friction for industry-leading shaft inertia and maximized transient response. The bearing system accommodates aggressive aero at low shaft speeds while maintaining stability at high shaft speeds where the high-end flow capabilities can shine.

Oil Management and Centre Housing has been designed to offer market-leading oil sling at low shaft speeds via an oversized shaft hub with improved oil sling at the compressor side. At the same time, double gas rings exist on the turbine side, combining to achieve exceptional oil management. Optimised Oil management ensures oil containment within the turbocharger assembly and eliminates the concern of oil passing into the compressor, or exhaust and contributes to optimal emissions. The Housing is specifically designed to aid oil flow and is manufactured from modernized cast iron, including an integrated backing plate for the compressor cover. This additional rigidity in the chassis allows better alignment and concentricity of the compressor cover while offering improved overall strength and impact resistance.

Aerodynamics of the Compressor Wheels has been created with aggressive low-speed movement in mind to aid in higher power levels at lower shaft speeds. The 7+7 Splitter Blade design uses a tapered back-cut wheel recessed into the centre housing for optimal airflow management. The compressor wheels are 2618-T6 Forged CNC Billet Aluminum, which is CNC Milled, including an integrated nut, further reducing rotating mass.

Transient Response is the name of the game. The Turbosmart range of Turbochargers was designed around an ultra-responsive bearing system and main shaft assembly through innovative and careful use and balance of technology and materials. This responsiveness can then be balanced with aggressive aero for improved performance at lower shaft speeds, reaching target boost and power levels earlier while also aiming for exceptional overall end-to-end engine pressure differential through the rear wheel and housing design and specification. The balance of attributes for these units has been aimed at acceleration via mass air flow optimization at all shaft speeds.

Develop. Test. Validate. The Turbosmart turbocharger range was designed to focus on the overall engine pressure differential, targeting lower pressure differentials across your engine through careful wheel design, trim and aerodynamic selection while maintaining the smallest, lightest and most responsive unit possible. The Turbosmart turbocharger range has been validated and tested to strict and demanding conditions, ensuring this optimum balance has been achieved and delivered, including all test data, including compressor maps. Nearly 30 years ago, I embarked on this incredible journey of founding Turbosmart, and as we step into 2024, I’ve never been more proud of the Turbosmart team. We are on the verge of our most exciting chapter yet, as we unveil a monumental achievement—our new line of cutting-edge Turbochargers. Turbochargers have been a goal of mine and Turbosmart’s for so many years that it’s hard to remember when I didn’t dream of this day. I still have the hand-drawn compressor wheels and surge relief designs I was toying with in the 90’s. Most of these ideas have gone out the window as our incredible team of engineers, customers and consultants have shaped, reshaped and redefined what is possible in turbocharger design – and I couldn’t be more excited. In addition to this remarkable milestone, we are continuing to push the envelope on how boost control is done.

This year also sees Turbosmart introduce the world’s first BoostGate, A cold side boost control device that allows racers to bleed boost from the intake rather than the traditional exhaust side wastegate. We are expanding our range of market-leading straight wastegates and continuing to evolve the world’s biggest and most comprehensive range of blow-off valves. 

Turbosmart Europe (established in 2022) is now fully operational, adding capacity to our international presence alongside Turbosmart USA (established in 2007) and Turbosmart UK (established in 2014). This global presence epitomizes Turbosmart’s commitment to entering new markets and gaining a deeper understanding of our customers’ needs, allowing us to develop world-leading products that cater to a broader audience. Turbosmart is more than just a business; it’s a community of enthusiasts dedicated to constant innovation in our products, support, and service. We have listened to your needs and have worked diligently to transform them into our mission. The very first part number to be released is the Turbosmart Upgrade Intercooler for the Ford F150 EcoBoost V6. The Ford F150, globally, is one of the most popular vehicles sold today, and no better to start developing our very own range of charge-cooler technology then on a vehicle which is near and dear to so many of our customers!

Turbosmart makes Intercoolers?

We do now – The secret is out! Turbosmart has been expanding our range of Turbocharger accessories year by year, and every time we decide to produce something new, you have to know it’s because we feel we can do something no one else can! The Turbsomart intercooler range is specifically designed to increase performance on even standard specification vehicles to support the flow and HP requirements of even heavily modified vehicles! We have been researching and developing our cores and design philosophies to ensure our solutions are adapted to the vehicles in a way that makes the most of the platform, optimizing performance while working with factory mounts, charge pipes and available space. We’ve looked, we’ve listened – We’re making the best performance bolt-on intercoolers you can have and making them with the same innovation,  quality and support you’ve come to expect from Turbosmart!

Ford F150 needs an intercooler?

It does! The Ford F150 has an intercooler from the factory, but our testing found it suffered from heat soaking. This is where the thermal mass of the intercooler isn’t large enough to normalise against the available airflow under normal driving conditions. As such, the ability to reduce air intake terms is heavily compromised.

Bring in the Engineers…

Based on the core data we observed, a bar and plate core were the way to go. While all solutions were modelled, thermal mass was maximized using a bar and plate design which directly addressed the number one performance-restricting issue. Several Ford F150s in Australia and the USA were disassembled, inspected and 3D scanned. This data was used to design and model the largest possible replacement intercooler into the front of an F150, without any cutting, trimming or fabrication. The model was CFD optimized to meet the required performance criteria, and various iterations were created and real-world validated to ensure our virtual findings could be replicated.

Why the long story?

This will be the approach every single intercooler Turbosmart product will undergo. We won’t be looking to slap an intercooler core we have into every car we can find. We’ll be looking at what the main performance restrictions are, what technology is at our disposal and what combination of performance and compromise is best suited to the job! We want Turbsomart customers to have the most powerful, consistent and longest-lasting upgrades they’ve ever had. And it starts now!

Turbosmart Performance Intercooler Upgrade Suit Ford F150 EcoBoost 2.7L and 3.5L V6 Petrol

The F150 EcoBoost intercooler upgrade from Turbosmart is a direct bolt-on upgrade for the factory intercooler. Massive increases in surface area and thermal mass, are designed to increase mass-air flow even on standard and mildly modified engines while providing maximum flow and efficiency for highly tuned vehicles. Includes a built maintenance drain for blow-by and condensation.

The CFD design-driven and real-world validated F150 intercooler upgrade has been developed to ensure a direct replacement for the factory unit, including factory locating pin/mount positions and integration with the factory/factory style charge pipes while providing an enormous +80% increase in cooling surface area with the same quality, performance and support you’ve come to expect from Turbsomart.

Introducing the Turbosmart BoostGate50, an aluminium charge-air controller! The BoostGate50 is a zero offset butterfly-style valve built within a billet aluminium body to provide a lightweight electronic charge air control solution! Being electronically actuated, the Boostgate50 can support limitless charge-air control strategies and is not limited by base spring pressures or external references such as manifold pressure or C02. It’s all electronic and will do exactly what you want!

Looks a little like the Turbosmart StraightGate range of external wastegates?

Good spotting! It is built around the same architecture and has the same zero-back drive technology and stainless steel butterfly and shaft assembly while reducing the weight and increasing simplicity! The all-new Billet aluminium body is suited specifically to charge pipe fitment, rather than having to hang the heavier stainless steel StraightGate and we;ve also reduced the profile of the electronic actuator by removing the water cooling galleries, which aren’t required for cold side charge air control.

What's Charge Air Control?

This is the technology and strategy being used at the higher ranks of drag racing where big cubes, big turbo and ever bigger boost are the name of the game! There are a couple of major benefits to using charge air control, and we can start with…

Direct control of mass air flow and charge air

Convention external wastegates work by opening and allowing exhaust gas to bypass the turbocharger, reducing shaft speed and boost. This works – Very well, however, it is an indirect control. Charge air however is immediate, direct and it is here to stay! Controlling the charge air itself, rather than ‘impacting’ it by controlling the exhaust gas is simply more direct and consistent.

Spool and Staging

In drag racing, the time sitting in staging under load waiting for your ideal boost and RPM to be achieved for launch can seem like an eternity, especially with large turbochargers, stall converters and 3-5000 HP ready to be unleashed. Reaction times can be everything to some people, and unnecessary seconds at full load on any engine, especially at a race engine, aren’t great. Charge Air control can halve this time. With turbo manifolds prioritizing your turbochargers and making the most of the exhaust gasses, your target boost can be reached faster and then maintained more accurately with charge air trimming, rather than impacting the exhaust flow to the turbos.

Compressor Speeds

Your turbocharger can be loaded up to the speed you want & maintain the entire run, with the BoostGate50 modulating how much of the charge air is to be consumed. There is no need to wait for your turbo to be up to speed. It’s already there – You’ll just need to decide how much of that wonderful boost you want to use!

Charge Air Control is NOT for Everyone

This will be suited for those who have a specific need for their engine and turbo combination (such as drag racing), and the turbo selection is already on point & perfected for the application. Whilst we are extremely excited to see how creative our customers, technical partners and #TeamTurbosmart racers get with this new technology, we know it’s not likely to end up on your average performance street car. Although… Let’s face it, there are some pretty tough street cars out there these days!

Now: Back to the all new BoostGate50

Turbosmart BoostGate50 is an electronically controlled butterfly-style valve for charge pipe boost control. The BoostGate is manufactured from Billet Aluminum for reduced mass and features the kind of control and flow you expect from the StraightGate series of Turbosmart products.

Unlike a traditional external wastegate which bypasses gas around the turbine housing aiming to reduce turbocharger shaft speed and effectively, boost levels – Charge Air control is a controlled bleed of the compressed air on the cold side of the turbocharger system. Mounted to the charge pipe, the BoostGate can modulate this air flow directly, rather than the indirect method of traditional control.

Charge-Air Control is specifically suited to applications such as drag racing, where turbocharger specifications have already been optimized, and the turbine is not the limiting performance factor. The BoostGate50 is a zero-offset butterfly-styled valve that enables incredible resolution, enormous flow and the kind of boost control required to deliver the perfect pass, every time. Equipped with the Patent Pending Zero-Backdrive gearbox technology to reduce overall power consumption and maximize response, the BoostGate50 is Engineered to Win!

The StraightGate76 is next level

The StraightGate76 is next level and takes the title of the world’s highest flowing wastegate, which the StraightGate50 has comfortably held since its release in 2021. The StraightGate76 isn’t just a little higher flowing; we’re talking near-enough, double! How does 723.7 CFM / 20.49m3 per minute flow sound? The zero-offset self-balancing nature of the valve ensures smooth, controlled operation with near linear control, designed for ultimate flow control and low opening angles while benefiting from that enormous flow at larger opening angles. Electronic actuation provides infinite boost control strategies. Limited only by your software and imagination.

Too big? No problem; let's look at the Straightgate40

Too big? No problem; let’s look at the Straightgate40 – a downsized, 40mm version of the Award Winning StraightGate, suitable for tighter engine bays and suited to lower flow requirements. Being a butterfly-style wastegate, the StraightGate40 benefits from huge flow relative to the valve size, but a smaller footprint to enable fitment in tighter confines! Again, electronic actuation provides infinite boost control strategies. Limited only by your software and imagination.

Why Straight?

That’s quite straightforward: efficiency. StraightGates are far more efficient at flowing gas, and unlike a poppet-style gas which has to turn the gas 90 degrees in operation, the StraightGate does no such thing and can flow much more. Butterfly-style valves also have a more linear flow around low lift and opening angle which means greater overall boost control. You may need to slightly re-imagine your engine bay, but once you’ve seen what you can do, you won’t want ever to turn back.

What does Zero-Offset mean?

This refers to the type of valve design we’ve used and means the shaft that the valve pivots on, is right down the middle. This detail might not sound overly important until considering the turbocharger drive pressure. Traditional poppet-style gates have this drive pressure pushing against the valve, and compensation is required by way of springs and your charge pressure to balance this out. The StraightGate system, however, is different, with the valve pivoting in the middle; 50% of the valve is pushed open, and 50% is pushed closed. This virtually negates the drive pressure your wastegate is exposed to and enables all the effort available to be used toward boost control, rather than fighting the drive forces.

Electronic Control

Turbosmart continues to show the world what electronic control is capable of in a motorsport, performance and enthusiast market. Electronic actuation means no springs, no hoses and no diaphragms. This all adds to a more direct and responsive relationship with your target boost! The ‘lag’ of action versus reaction with a traditional pneumatic actuated gate is a thing of the past, and you can now be predictive, rather than responsive.

Let us introduce you to the Turbosmart ProOPR. This new 2023 Boost-Referenced, rising rate oil pressure regulator with twin outlets is suitable for twin turbo plumbing. The new rising rate ProOPR is designed to provide the oil supply for two turbochargers and is rising rate to ensure the stable oil supply needed for big turbochargers and huge boost levels!

What’s new?

The new ProOPR is rising rate versus the traditional OPR V2 which is fixed rate. So while the OPR V2 targets 40psi under any conditions, the ProOPR is rising rate and starts with a lower base pressure and then creates a pressure differential so that the oil supply pressure increases in line with the boost pressure you’re creating. We’ve also included a second outlet, and while this is still a true inline regulator, the ProOPR is designed specifically to supply up to 2 turbochargers while simplifying plumbing and lines.

How does an inline OPR work?

The Turbosmart OPR range is a patented system regulating the oil supply to your turbocharger to ensure the right amount of oil is delivered to the bearing system. Turbocharger bearing systems require oil at pressure to lubricate the bearings of the main, balanced assembly, and the OPR range has been developed to take the guesswork out of getting the target oil pressure right.

Why reduce or modify the oil pressure at all?

There are 2 main reasons you will want to look closer at the oil pressure feeding your turbocharger. 

  1. Unlike some presume, oil is not simply forced in and then forced out the other side into the oil return. The inside of a bearing housing is more like an engine’s crankcase. Oil is forced in, through the bearing, but it is then simply left in the sump and needs to be given a good reason to leave. Some of this is engineered into the housing and gravity helps with the rest. But it is not forced. If you have more volume than your design and gravity can handle, you end up with oil pooling in the assembly and can overcome the oil management system within the assembly and enter into either the compressor or turbine covers. A symptom of this issue is oil traces in your compressor and charge pipes or unexplained oil smoking from your exhaust.
  2. Even if your turbocharger oil return is in good shape, there are two dynamic seals on your turbine shaft, one at each end near the housings and each forming part of the oil management. At low shaft speeds (also, low boost), these systems are generally less efficient and less able to seal effectively. The symptoms can be the same as pooling and overflow, but the cause differs. You have too much oil pressure at low shaft speeds.

Why would you use a rising rate regulator?

It’s not for everyone – In fact, the OPR V2 inline regulator is for the greater majority of performance enthusiasts and racers as this isn’t rising rate, isn’t boost referenced and constantly targets an oil pressure of around 40 psi which is the sweet spot for the virtually all modern ball bearing turbochargers! The new ProOPR, however, comes in handy when you are feeding huge turbos and running an even bigger boost. Using a boost-reference rising rate system, we could effectively provide a slightly lower base pressure at lower boost pressures and ramp the oil supply up in line with the boost pressures the turbocharger is making. This provides protection and confidence under the extreme conditions of big horsepower drag racing applications while not compromising cold start and low boost performance, which can impact bearing system efficiency and reduce spool and transient response and, in some turbocharger designs, allow oil to overcome the oil control systems and enter into either the turbine or compressor circuits of the car.

Is there a filter included with the ProOPR?

Yes, like the OPR V2, the ProOPR includes a built-in, serviceable and replaceable oil filter to protect your valuable turbocharger further. The 44um Stainless Steel Mesh filter is specified to ensure protection for your turbocharger, while not impacting the filtration balance of the engine and existing ‘motor-oil’ filter. These filters can be cleaned and refitted and are available separately as a complete replacement element.

Boost-Balance Technology

Part of what makes Turbosmart Valves the most reliable on the market today is our boost balance technology. What is it? Fairly simple, your engine’s pressure is fed to both sides of the diaphragm. This means both sides of the valve are constantly exposed to the same pressures, and to this, the backside has a spring to ensure it is always closed when needed. The only way to open it? A pressure differential is created when the throttle starts to close. Put, the more boost you feed a Turbosmart valve, the more it wants to seal and keep closed!

Vent to Atmosphere, or Recirculate?

Up to you. Turbosmart now produces our traditional vent-to-atmosphere RacePort blow-off valves and a recirculating valve we call PlumBack. Both valves provide market-leading flow, are indestructible when it comes to feeding them boost and both now incorporate EM technology! No matter which way you go, you can be assured these valves will do exactly what you ask of them, no matter the conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

EM stands for Electro-Mechanical, and it is Turbosmart’s patented and award-winning technology for combining electronic control and mechanical advantage. Intelligent channelling of charge air in the caps of our EM valves creates the mechanical force required to provide motorsport-proven valve actuation and operation while our proprietary high-speed bullet valve allows full electronic control of the charge air movement.

Vehicle manufacturers have used electronic valves for some time now to provide even greater control over air movement in modern turbocharged vehicles. While traditional pneumatic valves require a pressure differential to actuate, electronic valves can be activated independent of a pressure differential, and this is where some of the OEM engineers have found advantages in meeting torque management and emissions requirements with finite valve control.

Control. Because traditional pneumatic valves require a pressure differential to actuate, you may not have considered how opening the valve in certain circumstances outside normal operation may help you. Consider opening your valve just a little while staging for your next drag race to help fine-tune the torque you leave the line with. Add a closed-loop control strategy via your programable ECU, and you’ve gained some serious consistency!

How much do you have? The Turbocmart Boost-Balance system is pretty simple – The more boost you have, the better the valve will seal. It is that simple. The limit of a RacePort Valve isn’t your boost; it is the total airflow your engine can produce, and the RacePort valves have enough flow to support over 2,500HP! The RacePort is the undisputed champion, flowing over 330 CFM via a CFD-designed 50mm valve and body.

Originally, the Turbosmart RacePort was developed using Turbosmart’s proprietary V-Band system, which has been the standard for nearly two decades. We were naked, however, to adapt the RacePort to other commercially available flanges – the difference, however minor, is the receiving groove between the valve body and the weld flange. The Turbosmart system in this scenario would be considered the male version, while our competition and industry peers use the female. We now offer both to ensure our customers have every opportunity to fit their favourite RacePort, no matter what car or charge pipe they have in front of them.

Kompact EM Series to suit Mercedes C63

Turbosmart is excited to announce the release of the Kompact EM valves to suit the Mercedes C63 fitted with the M177 Twin Turbocharged V8.

The Mercedes W205 C63 is based on the C class platform and features 469HP and 650Nm straight from Germany via a Twin Turbo 4.0 Litre Petrol V8 designated the M177. The M177 features a Hot Vee configuration, meaning the turbochargers are in the centre valley of the V8 rather than by the side of the engine. This hot vee configuration is becoming more popular for its compact packaging and efficiency. However, modifications are a little tricker!

Do not fear, the Kompact EM is here!

The Kompact EM range from Turbosmart is an upgraded diverter valve solution that takes the mechanical advantages of pneumatic valves and integrates full factory and OE functionality via the original electronics and control strategy. The limitation of the factory diverter valves being fully electronic is they’re only ever as good as the strength of the solenoid in the valve. The Kompact EM, however, has boost on its side!

The Kompact EM Valve was awarded the SEMA  Performance-Street New Product Award in 2018 in the USA and was then backed up by the Australian Industry group AAAA early in 2019 when it was awarded the Product Innovation Award in recognition of the Industry leading OE Plus style solution.

The Turbosmart EM Valve to suit the Mercedes C63 is an upgrade to the factory valve, replacing the OE Unit with a Motorsport Proven Billet Aluminum piston style valve with full OEM integration via Patented Airflow strategies and a proprietary solenoid valve. Available in both vent-to-atmosphere DualPort for a little extra noise or the recirculating PlumBack valve for a more discerning improvement, the performance benefits are the same, but the choice is yours!

Turbosmart has expanded the Compressed Gas External Wastegate range to use the full range of spring options from the GenV wastegate range, meaning you can now load a C02 / compressed gas gate with up to 26psi worth of base spring pressure!

The CompGate40, HyperGate45 and ProGate50 are all now available in CG / C02 Full Range, meaning a new actuator cap specifically designed for compressed gas – Joining the PowerGate60 Version we released late in 2022.

The Compressed Gas Series

Because C02 is manipulated at such high pressures on either side of the diaphragm to control boost on drag cars, it is generally accepted a relatively soft spring is all that is needed as the compressed gas is doing all the work. Compressed gas generally means a much wider tuning window than traditional boost reference can achieve… But Turbosmart has been watching and listening.

CO2, Max - Compressed Gas: Full Range

The Full Range versions of the Turbosmart external wastegates now allow the ‘usual’ spring options from our standard range, and for a small size penalty (compared to the traditional CG variants), you can now fine-tune your setup with base spring options from 3psi, up to 26psi. This extra mechanical advantage helps maintain boost control across an enormous range and can be benefitted from as staging and traction across the first 60 feet are optimised on big power setups.

Optional Position Sensor Upgrades Available

As with all GenV external wastegates, the Full Range variants can be updated with a position sensor cap which uses our unique hall effect, non-contact sensor for measuring valve position. This system, being hall effect, means there is no contact with the valve, and this eliminates issues with temperature, fatigue and possible leaks from actuator housings. The GenV position sensor cap incorporates a blind hole for the sensor which, can never leak!

RacePort: The story so far…

First released at SEMA in 2007 and receiving several redesigns and upgrades since, including moving to our unique locking collar design and improvements in flow and weight when upgraded in line with our GenV architecture overhaul, the RacePort is a proven performer with heritage that continues to get better with age!

The RacePort Series of blow off valves are famous for being amazingly high-flowing, small, and lightweight blow off valves for turbocharged and supercharged engines. RacePort valves are diaphragm operated for superfast response and feature Turbosmart’s unique boost-balance technology, which means the more boost you feed them, the better they seal – simple as that!

The RacePort valves have been optimised over time for maximal flow and longevity. This has led to the RacePort GenV valve providing the highest levels of durability in even the most demanding environments while maintaining a simple install in the smallest and lightest package available. Advanced options such as hall-effect position sensors and a clockable cap make for convenient routing of reference hoses in even the tightest engine bays.

CFD Driven & Real World Validated Design

Flowing over 330 CFM, the RacePort is the highest flowing 50mm / 2.0” blow-off valve on the market which means it can vent the volume of air you need, faster than any other.

Diaphragm actuation means lower sprung mass and a lighter spring combination for unparalleled valve response. The positive sealing valve means the instant the valve has touched the seat; you’re building boost and back in the game.

Boost-Balance Technology

Turbosmart uses a unique boost-balance principle designed into all of our blow-off valve and diverter valves, which means the more boost you feed your Turbosmart valve, the better it seals. Unlike alternative designs where you need different springs for different boost levels, the spring in a Turbosmart valve is designed to respond to pressure differential such as vacuum under idle and deceleration conditions.

GenV Architecture

Utilising the same backbone as Turbosmart’s award-winning GenV Wastegate range means the GenV RacePort series of blow-off valves benefit from the same industry-leading features as the external wastegate range. One of these benefits is the ability to include a hall effect valve position sensor on the top of the valve. Turbosmart’s HE sensor upgrade features a blind hole in the cap for zero leak operation. It uses a non-contact hall effect sensor which, unlike many valves on the market, cannot leak and provides greater data resolution! You also benefit from a top cap that can be rotated to any angle for the most suitable routing of your reference hoses via our Twin 1/8 NPT Port, GenV Cap.

Turbosmart Releases New Modular System for Vacuum Reference and Remote Sensor Mounting

Turbosmart is excited to release a new Modular system for vacuum reference and sensor distribution. The modular system includes vacuum reference distribution blocks and remote mounting sensor manifolds, which allow you to mount expensive and necessary sensors away from heat and vibration. You can have all reference distribution blocks, a 3-channel sensor manifold, or a combination of both or build your own with any elements to suit your needs! The units are mixed & match and click together and reliably so you can build your own to suit your needs. Billet Aluminum and anodized black, with all Sensor and Reference ports being 1/8NPT.

Relocating Sensors away from the heat and vibration of an engine is essential for sensor life and data quality. Having a reference and vacuum manifold means having a neat, centralized and balanced reference signal for essential engine components such as fuel pressure regulators, MAP sensors, wastegates etc. 

Designed to provide clean installation options for critical engine sensors, Turbosmart’s new Modular system offers Reference Distribution Blocks and Remote Sensor Manifold Blocks, which can be mixed & matched. This allows users to relocate sensors away from heat sources and vibrations that can shorten their lifespan or distort readings. The blocks are machined from billet aluminium and then anodized black with all the necessary ports in 1/8 NPT; perfect for any application where accurate readings are essential such as fuel pressure regulators or MAP sensors. Combine this with the reference distribution block, which provides a central location for multiple channels of remote-mounted sensors; it’s easy to see how this modular kit could be used in any build – street or race car alike!

Vacuum / Reference Distribution

Engine bays can get over-run with several hoses and T-Pieces to share the engine MAP reference with engine components such as the Fuel Pressure Regulator, The Engine’s ECU via a MAP Sensor, Blow Off Valve, Wastegate Actuator and Boost Control Solenoids… The Reference Distribution Block can simplify this problem and creates a neater engine bay by centralizing this reference signal in one block, which is neat & simple via a shared, multi-port Vacuum / Reference Distribution block.

Remote Sensor Manifolds

Remote Mounting of Sensors is a way of isolating expensive and sensitive sensors from unnecessary heat and vibration. A well-isolated sensor will last longer and provide higher-quality data to your ECU and data logging gear. By servicing the sensor with the source via quality lines the remote sensor manifold can be mounted in a dry, cooler and more stable environment, such as the inner guard of the bulkhead of your engine bay.

Turbosmart Announce Pneumatic StraightGate50!

Turbosmart is excited to announce the expansion of the StraightGate50 Series External Wastegate to include Pneumatic control with both boost-based and vacuum-based covered! The Multiple Award Winning Electronic StraightGate50, launched at the SEMA show in 2021 to SEMA Best New Performance-Racing Product as well as Best New Engineered Product Awards, is now available with simple pneumatic with the Introduction of the pSG50 StraightGate50 and pSGV StraightGate50 (Vacuum) External Wastegates.

The Highest Flowing and most controllable External Wastegate on the market is now available with the simplicity of pneumatic control, expanding the ease of installation and setup. The zero-offset and self-balancing butterfly-style wastegate mean a greater tuning window with over five times base spring pressure achieved with external boost control and truly advanced strategies for the vacuum-based units, including the ability to mean and improve emissions compliance.

The StraightGate50 is the highest flowing wastegate on the market by its efficient butterfly-style valve and straight body, meaning the exhaust gas is no longer required to be turned 90 degrees like in the case of a traditional poppet-style gate.

The available actuators include the boost-based unit from the Turbosmart GenV IWG Internal Wastegate actuator series, which means the one unit can operate in single-port and twin-port configurations while utilising a huge range of spring options. The Vacuum-Based unit uses the vIWG Vacuum Internal Wastegate Actuator Series and relies on the Vacuum based architecture and is based on a 6inHG spring and includes a twin port option for advanced strategy, including the ability for boost-assist via the second chamber.

Ensure you have an over-boost cut-out. This safety feature is built into all factory, aftermarket & programmable ECUs. You can never be too careful. Make sure it is set to a sensible& reasonable limit. Increasing the boost will put more load on your engine, and you must consider other tune-related factors. If in any doubt, speak with a professional tuner/calibrator.

The StraightGate50 from Turbosmart is a butterfly-style external wastegate that uses a zero-offset and self-balancing butterfly valve to control exhaust gas flow. Unlike the traditional poppet-style valve, these wastegates both flow incredibly high amounts of gas thanks to the efficiency of such a valve over a poppet style and much greater control. All wastegates have a dynamic performance where flow can be measured against lift. A Poppet style generally has a relatively large flow at the initial opening and low lift, which hen tends to flatten out as the valve lifts. StriaghtGate50, by comparison, has a very linear flow versus opening angle, especially with greater resolution around the initial opening and low opening angles.

Yes. The StriaghtGate50 uses a zero-offset style butterfly valve, which means at any point in time, the exhaust gas energy applied to the valve is offset by the force being applied to the side of the valve that opens as well as the side of the valve that closes. This effective force equals zero, meaning theoretically, no matter what force is applied, it is balanced with no effect on the valve position. This means the wastegate is massively easier to control, which means lighter springs can be used, a faster response can be achieved and better real-world performance and reliability.

Yes. Traditional Poppet style wastegates generally achieve 2-3 times the base spring pressure in overall pressure. For ten psi of base spring pressure, you can likely achieve between 20-30psi of overall pressure with reference manipulation and boost control. The StraightGate50, however, benefits from the self-balancing zero-offset butterfly valve and can provide a much larger tuning window. The StriaghtGate50 can achieve more than five times the base pressure, so for the same 10psi spring example above, you can expect over 50psi total boost with reference manipulation and boost control.

Unlike the Electronic StraightGate50, which requires an advanced control strategy, the Pneumatic Series of StraightGate50 requires fairly common control strategies. A simple Boost-Tee will run great results from the Boost-Based version, while traditional Vacuum-Based strategies will work perfectly on the Vac-Based StriaghtGate50. It’s simple reference manipulation and controlled bleed – the kind of boost control that has been commonplace for decades.

The VBand allows rotation through 360 degrees with no impact on valve operation. Furthermore, the Billet Actuator bracket can be clocked to any of the three options provided by the 3-pin mounting system, providing a huge range of mounting options to fit into even the most complex and packed modern engine bay. There are design elements to ensure the least heat transfer possible into the diaphragm housing, and we have validated this to 1300 Degree C with no impact on performance and reliability. Like all things, however, the best way to mount the unit would be to acknowledge the basics… Exhausts and manifolds are hot & heat rises, so further away from the heat source and below it (rather than directly on-top) is ideal if possible. Also, to note, even OEM actuators on turbocharged factory cars place actuators in front of the turbo, in a stream of engine bay air-flow, so offering your wastegate the same courtesy will ensure a long and trouble-free service life.

All New OPR V2 Turbocharger Oil Pressure Regulator from Turbosmart

Turbosmart proudly announces the All-New Patent Pending OPR V2 Turbo Oil Pressure Regulator. The OPR V2 is an inline, return-less regulator of oil pressure for turbochargers, including a built-in 44 Micron Oil Filter. The New OPR V2 is AVAILABLE NOW, more straightforward and even easier to install thanks to the Male -4AN inlet & the outlet is entirely Serviceable and Rebuildable.

Turbochargers require a supply of oil for lubrication and specifically require a ‘window’ of oil pressure for the best results. This window is lower than most engines produce for other areas of the engine and the OPR V2 from Turbosmart is the simplest solution. No more guessing restrictor sizes, nor more smoke show at the tailpipe – the OPR V2 delivers the correct oil pressure, all the time!

The OPR V2 Oil Pressure Regulator features an inline, return-less fitment and down-regulates turbo oil pressure to suit most turbochargers. Directional logic is engraved on the unit to ensure it is not fitted incorrectly and provides a laminar flow, no matter the pressure, grade or temperature of the engine oil it is fed. The Patent Pending oil control strategy will provide rock-solid reliable oil pressure.

As simple as Fitting an inline oil filter

The OPR V2 is now a simple inline installation with no return line to plumb in and complicate the engine bay. Just like an inline oil filter, the OPR will fit onto the standard -4AN oil supply line and perfectly regulate oil pressure to suit the needs of the turbocharger. As an added feature, it also happens to be an oil filter! There is a built-in Stainless Steel Mesh 44 Micron Oil Filter. The filter is replaceable and has a service kit if you want a new filter and replacement seals.

Taking the Guesswork away

The OPR V2 doesn’t use an external reference and isn’t impacted by the supply pressure, which often changes from one RPM to another. The Patent Pending oil control strategy within the tiny OPR V2 is fit and forget. There are no settings, no setup or calibration to be worried about.

Guage or Sensor Port

Built into the OPVR V2 is an optional 1/8NPT Port, which is included so you can fit a gauge to see the pressure yourself or a data log in your ECU with a sensor. The port only reads outlet pressure, so you can be sure what you read is what your turbo is receiving.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Turbosmart OPR is a regulator of oil pressure designed for turbochargers. Turbochargers generally require engine oil supplied at pressure from the engine. Turbochargers have a target window of oil pressure to operate efficiently and safely. Engines typically have an oil pump to provide many parts of the machine, including the turbocharger. However, these pumps generally increase pressure and engine RPMs increase. This is exaggerated on modified; high-performance, and race engines where high base & overall engine oil pressure are achieved and desired by other engine areas, such as crankshafts and camshafts. The role of the OPR is to down-regulate the supply of oil to the turbocharger to better suit its needs.

Turbochargers are designed with a balance in mind, and the oil pressure is considered with this. Within the centre cartridge of the turbocharger, some seals separate the engine oil, bearings and shafts with the exhaust gas and intake charge. These seals are not rubber like you think, but rather a gas ring, more like what is found on a piston. The profile of these seals is designed around an assumption of oil pressure, and when over this pressure, the oil can compromise the seals. The most common symptom is when an engine smokes excessively, caused by engine oil passing the seal and entering the exhaust gas.

The OPR V2 Oil Pressure Regulator is an inline, return-less design that simplifies installation. The same ability to regulate oil pressure is achieved through a Patent Pending oil control strategy within the unit. It is no longer necessary to install a return line like the original OPRt40 to achieve the target oil pressure. The OPR V2 also includes a built-in Stainless Steel 44 Micron Mesh Filter to help safeguard your turbocharger. Another improvement in the new OPR V2 means a fitting kit is no longer required as the units are machines with Male -4AN inlet & outlet, which is yet another part that is no longer needed, increasing the value and easing installation. The OPR V2 from Turbosmart will fit inline to your turbocharger just like a traditional oil filter & will do so much more!

The OPR V2 will achieve 40 psi +/- 10% dependant on several variables, primarily concerned with the grade of engine oil used and its operating temperature. The great news is the entire window of oil pressure the OPR is spec’d to product is well within the design parameters of all known Ball-Bearing Turbochargers. As many journal-bearing turbochargers, as we have found supporting documentation on. We cannot guarantee that this will suit every turbocharger ever produced, as the data to support that claim is unavailable. However, if you have any doubts, you can check with your manufacturer of yours and you will see, this is almost certainly suitable.

This refers to the quality of oil flowing out of the OPR V2 Oil Pressure regulator. If you are concerned the oil is bearing aerated or the quality of the flow is compromised as a by-product of the regulation, don’t be. It’s not and we have designed it not to impact the quality of flow & validated this at feed pressure several times higher than any engine can produce.

There are a few reasons.

The first is these regulators are dynamic, whereas a restrictor is static. A restrictor can modulate oil flow, it simply reduces it with the hope of achieving the required pressure and cannot compensate for oil temperature, oil grade or the increase in pressure as a result of engines operating at higher RPMs or with high performance (hi-pressure) oil pumps. The OPR, on the other hand, can & does.

Aftermarket turbocharger installs mean no restrictor off the shelf suits your variables without trial and error. You could guess lucky, but it would be a guess & is still limited by the grade, temperature and increase in pressure due to RPMs and pump changes. The OPR V2 handles all this for you, installing no different from an inline oil filter.

Turbosmart is proud to announce the release of the Kompact BOV to suit the Hyundai i20 N

Turbsomart expands the Kompact diverter and blow-off valves to include a bolt-on upgrade for the Hyundai i20 N. This bolt-on performance upgrade will replace the factory plastic bypass valve with a billet aluminium valve using Turbosmart’s motorsport-proven piston technology to provide greater reliability, throttle response and boost holding capacity over the life of the car!
 
This is two valves in one and you can configure the TS-0203-1033 to be a completely recirculating valve and operate just like a factory item (Quietly) or as a Dual Port where excess air will be vent-to-atmosphere for a little more noise – The choice is yours!
 
The 2020 Hyundai i20 N joins the recent impressive hot hatch lineup designated N-Line from Hyundai while the i20 N badge has been around since 2008, it is the turbocharged 1.6 Liter i20 N that has been available since late 2020 that is getting all the attention. Powered by a 1.6 Litre GDI (Direct Injection Fuel System) and delivering 150KW (200HP) through a 6 speed manual transmission and mechanical LSD (Limited Slip Differential), the i20 N from Hyundai boasts ‘racetrack capabilities in daily driving…’.

The Kompact Valve Range

The Kompact Valve Range includes a Billet Aluminum constructed valve utilising a 28mm, positive sealing piston with Turbosmart’s ‘Boost-Balance’ System resulting in virtually unlimited boost holding characteristics. Also, the Kompact Range is designed as a direct replacement for the factory item with huge improvements to performance in the short term & reliability in the long term, including allowing for performance upgrades down the road! Sheer Driving Pleasure with the all NEW Kompact EM series to suit the BMW N20 & N26 Engines

Turbosmart expands the Kompact EM Range with a specific bolt-on upgrade for the BMW N20 and N26 engine as fitted to the BMW Range of turbocharged 4-cylinder vehicles.

The BMW N20 platform is a four cylinder inline turbocharged DOHC petrol engine produced from 2011 until 2017 and was a replacement for N52 and N53 Engines. The N20 produces between 115KW (154BHP) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) and 180 kW (241 bhp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) depending on spec and vehicle it was fitted to, from an aluminium block and head combination including a single, twin-scroll turbocharger, double VANOS (variable valve timing) and a direct injection fuel system.

 

For several years now, OE manufacturers have been using the diverter valve on the turbocharger system for more than compressor surge and, as such, found it helpful to electrify the once pneumatic valve. Traditional pneumatic valves required a pressure differential, caused by the closing of the throttle against boost pressure to activate the valve, whereas moving to an electronic valve meant opening up a host of virtually unlimited tuning and calibration options for the OE engineers to meet fine-tuned torque requirements as well as assisting with emissions and overall package efficiency.

This is where the Turbosmart Kompact EM Series of valves steps in. The Patented Kompact EM Valve technology means Turbosmart valves are electro-mechanical and, while fully integrating with the factory ECU and strategy, still provide the bullet-proof mechanical advantages and reliability of a piston-based, mechanical valve!

Kompact EM Award-Winning Technology

The Turbosmart EM Valve to suit the N20 and N26 Engines is an upgrade to the factory valve, replacing the OE Unit with a Motorsport Proven Billet Aluminum piston style valve with full OEM integration, via Patented Airflow strategies and a proprietary solenoid valve. Available in both Kompact EM Plumback Upgrade Diverter Valve (Quite) and Kompact EM Dual Port Blow-Off Valve (Noisey), there is an upgraded valve available now to suit your choice!
