How a Blow-Off Valve works in under 50 seconds. 🏁

A Blow-Off Valves’s purpose is simple. Protect the turbo from compressor surge. It does this by operating off of a pressure differential. What does that mean? Let’s break it down!

Your Blow-off Valve (BOV) has a hose that is connected to the intake manifold. This is for vacuum/pressure reference. When your throttle body opens and the turbos begin to build boost and fill the charge pipe, intercooler, and intake manifold. That line connected to the BOV is also pressurized. The valve cannot be forced open because it is filled with the same pressure as there is in the charge pipe BUT, the BOV has the help is a spring to hold it shut. This means that no matter the pressure in the charge pipe, the BOV will stay shut. When the throttle body closes the pressure has nowhere to go. Remember that line on the BOV connected to the intake manifold? That line is now under vacuum. This is where the pressure differential happens. Vacuum is in the BOV cap pulling on the piston while pressure in the charge pipe is simultaneously pushing the piston from underneath letting pressure efficiently escape from the charge pipes making a “PSSSSH” noise.

When there is no BOV in the system that pressure has nowhere to go so it tries to make its way out of the place it came from, the turbo. When pressure is trying to escape past a wheel actively spinning against it you get compressor surge. The “stustustu” noise is not your BOV. It is your compressor wheel cutting through pressurized air.
