WTAC 2025: Turbosmart Turbocharged and Racing for the Podium

Held annually at the iconic Sydney Motorsport Park over two days, the World Time Attack Challenge gives teams the chance to push their cars to the absolute limit on a global stage. Each car and driver aim to get their best time over a single lap, pushing the limits of both man and machine. With over 70 teams spread across 7 classes, there was plenty to see at the event.

Lamspeed GR Yaris - 1st in Tuner Class

A new addition to the WTAC field is the Tuner class. With cars getting faster every year, this class is aimed at getting a more grassroots level of competition back on the track.

This year’s event saw the introduction of the new entry level Tuner Class. Getting back to the grassroots level of time attack, this class gives competitors the chance to show their ingenuity within a strict rule set only allowing mild modifications and relying on setup and driver skill.

Adam Casmiri took out the top spot in the Tuner Class piloting the Lamspeed Toyota GR Yaris. With a Turbosmart 5862 B frame turbocharger boosting the 3 cylinder, Adam piloted the Yaris to an impressive time of 1:35,485.Follow the Lamspeed team’s World Time Attack journey.

Last Minute Record for Alex Michalsky

Paddle shift sequential gearboxes and full aero kits make the Clubsprint class look like the upper classes of the not too distant past. The Lap times don’t look too different either.

After over 3 years in development, Alex Michalsky steered his Plazmaman Tommy Makinen Evo 6.5 to a blistering 1:30,718. With the top spot going back and forth over the two days, Alex pulled out the winning lap in the last minutes during the Superlap Shootout. The cooler weather and the clear track of the final session was the extra bit Alex needed to secure the win and set a new class record.

Not Just a Time Attack Evo

The brief for GT Evolution wasn’t to build a dedicated time attack car, but to build a track car capable of winning WTAC. Coming out swinging in Open Class was Darren Bishop behind the wheel of his GT Evolution Evo 7 with a blinder of a lap recording 1:26.819 around the GP circuit. With a fresh powertrain, Turbosmart 6466 turbo and new aero package being finished at the eleventh hour, Darren had his work cut out shaking down the new setup hours before the main event.

All that worked paid off in the end, as Darren finished the event in the top spot, taking out the Open Class.

New Tyres, New Aero, More Power!

WTAC veteran Nathan Morcom piloted the newly upgraded Global Aircraft Services Pro Open Class Evo. There was plenty to learn with a new tyre, bigger aero and more power to play with.

Nathan Morcom and the Global Aircraft Services Evo were at the pointy end of the Pro Open Class (new for 2025). These teams are pushing the limits of what is possible for these tin top cars. With so much carbon and aero, it’s hard to believe they once started their life as a road going chassis. One big change for this year’s event was the move to a slick tyre meaning the GAS team added a whole lot more downforce, a Turbosmart 7675 turbocharger and a lot more power to the Evo before this year’s event. This resulted in a lap time of 1:25.191 which was enough to get the 3rd position in the Pro Open class.

Drew Hall’s R34 GT-R Piloted by Cole Powelson

Only getting a small window for the perfect lap, Cole Powelson drove Drew Hall’s Croydon Racing Developments R34 GT-R, locking in a very respectable time early in the competition and securing second place in the Pro-Am Class.

At the top end of town, Drew’s carbon-clad R34 GT-R was out in force with Cole behind the wheel. Despite only getting a couple of sessions, the team still managed to finish strong, recording a very impressive 1:27.742 with their Turbosmart 7880 turbocharger helping boost the RB to over 1000 HP.

With another World Time Attack in the books, and a strong result for Team Turbosmart, we’d like to extend a congratulations to the teams who made it all possible.
